Psy 300: Personal Decision Making
Instruction and practice in cognitive aides for improving intuitive and
analytic thinking in making real-world decisions-creating new ideas, managing
complexity, dealing with tradeoffs among conflicting goals, and choosing
among alternatives whose outcomes are uncertain.
Psy 410: Meeting Conflict Creatively
Ways to achieve openness to the self, openness to the other, and openness to the problem in the resolution of conflicts. Methods for achieving openness to the self are based on personality theory; methods for achieving openness to the other are based on communication theory; and methods for achieving
openness to the problem are based on decision theory. The methods are applied to actual conflicts during the course. Taught jointly with Larry
Steward in Speech Communication.
Psy 491/591: Decision Making I
Values and choice. Normative models, descriptive models, and cognitive aids for structuring decision problems, evaluating consequences of alternative
course of action, and choosing among alternatives. Prerequisites: Psy 300, Psy 348 or permission of instructor.
Psy 492/592: Decision Making II. Judgment and Reasoning. Normative models, descriptive models, and cognitive aides for judgment and reasoning about probability, variation, covariation, and causality in anticipating the consequences of alternative courses
of action. Prerequisite: Psy 491/591 or permission of instructor. Psy 493/593: Decision Making Laboratory.
Practice in the application of material covered in Psy 491/591 and Psy 492/592. Prerequisites: Psy 491/591, Psy 492/592, and permision of instructor. PSY 410/510: Meeting Conflict Creatively.
Instruction and practice in the application of methods for achieving
opennes to the self, openness to the other, and openness to the problem in working toward the resolution of real-world conflicts.
